    An (un)timely Introduction

I know this is quite late. Okay, who am I kidding, this is way overdue, but you know what they say (old as it may seem), better late than never (is it really?)

    Hi, I’m Daine Rhythm Daling

When I first checked the course syllabus on the first day, I immediately recounted my experiences in the past courses I had back in EEE. Math 114 was our linear algebra course, and I quite enjoyed it except for the hellhole that is matrices. Nonetheless, the linear algebra part got me excited. For the latter parts, I was pretty excited to meet my good old friends Pierre-Simon Laplace and Joseph Fourier. Exactly a year ago they nearly beat me to death in my Signal Processing class, notoriously known as EEE 35. While I did fail that class, I was however excited to take another shot.

I would actually consider myself pretty comfortable with math. Shifting into Computer Science, I was deeply motivated by the theoretical aspect more than the part where people make cool websites and video games. I knew math and logic would be the heart of it all, two fields I would not consider myself a stranger to.

At the time, my dominant feeling was that of excitement. I could not wait to brush up on my linear algebra and get another chance to face Laplace transformations and the Fourier series.

    Daya.

Hi, I’m Arianne, and although hindi ko sya parating mapanindigan in areas like my classes (dahil orgmates ko lang mostly tumatawag sakin nito), I’ve been trying to get people to call me Daya HAHA. The reason lang is that I feel that I share the name with too many people na and that I really like Daya, but any of the two would work pa rin (((:

As always (and as someone na 3 beses nang naging prof si sir), naexcite ako dahil si Sir Paul ‘to and for sure may panibagong kwento na naman yung magiging exams sa 130 HAHA.

Not very, but I’m warming up to it as I see more and more applications of it in things I’m interested in. It took me a while, but I now clearly see that math is in everything, and that math can be beautiful.

    Sakto lang po hehehe

    *le semi-late intro*

(I don’t usually format my blog posts like this but it’s already 2AM so oh well)

    What’s your name?

Hi guys, I’m Juan Gabriel Tamayo, but you can call me Gabe.

What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?

“Sana totoo yung rumors na si Sir Paul yung magtuturo 😦 “. Was not disappointed 😀

How comfortable are you with math?

Math and I are pretty tight. We’ve had our fair share of maximas and minimas, but our friendship is still an increasing function. We know our limits, so we don’t plot anything that would result in a discontinuity in our relations. Transparency is an integral part of our friendship, so we make sure to know each other’s problems and variables and find solutions for our equations. (okay, enough math puns)

What’s your dominant feeling right now?

    current-mood

It’s 2AM and I haven’t started studying yet so yay

Okay woo intro done (sorry sir for doing this just now 😦 )

Also, note to future self: Sleep is good, but so is NOT CRAMMING. Please get your priorities straight thanks huhuhu

Pero when I learned that si Sir Paul yung maghahandle, nagkaroon ako ng pag-asa na baka pwede namang mahalin ang subject na ito. Hehe. :))

    Week 1: Introduce yourself

Hi!

    Week 1: Introduce yourself

    What’s your name?

Hi, my name is Ryan Avi G. Rivera. You can call me Ryan. 😊

What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?

l was not actually aware what CS130 is about. So when my friend told that it was more on Mathematics than programming, I was very excited since I enjoy learning concepts and applications more than programming. 😊

How comfortable are you with math?

I’m comfortable with math when I give my best effort in understanding and learning the topic. I practice solving problems again and again until I master how to solve that kind of problem. So, if I give my best efforts to CS130, I think I’ll have a lot of fun with the course while learning.

What’s your dominant feeling right now?

I feel excited with a lot of things. I feel excited with the new semester, the Miss Universe 2017, the mountains I’m going to hike this year, and with what 2017 has in store for me. 😊

    Hello

    • What’s your name?
Hi, I’m Sigfried. Most people call me Sig.
    • What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?
At the very least, I want to expand my way of thinking mathematically/analytically and hopefully I would be able to apply these new cognitive strategies to programming. CS 130 is going to be my mental gym for my other CS courses.
    • How comfortable are you with math?
Math can be hard to learn, but I am usually more tenacious on studying about it than with my other subjects. Math can also be fun though. I usually play with numbers in my head and try to come up with tricks of my own.
    • What’s your dominant feeling right now?
Thankful for being healthy and alive. Getting physically sick is not one thing I would want to experience. It’s awful to feel useless and make others feel worried about me.

    • What’s your name?

My name is Don Rodolfo Padilla Abril. My nicknames include Don, Doño, DR, and Utoy as a reference to a Pugad Baboy character. Just call me Don. A little trivia: I am the second Don in the family, the first being my only brother Don Julio. Our names were taken from our father Rodolfo Julio. Share lang.

    • What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?

Upon taking this course I knew I would be facing a lot of hard work as I have before with other math-intensive subjects.

    • How comfortable are you with math?

I’ve always said that I have a love-hate relationship with math. Whether I’m comfortable with it or not depends on the specific subject matter I’m currently tackling. For instance, I hated Math 17, but loved Math 53. There are topics that come smoothly and there are topics that don’t. Simply put, I’m about as comfortable with math as it allows me to be.

    • What’s your dominant feeling right now?

I’ve just finished with a satisfying meal after a tiring 2-hour trip, and all that I can think of is the sweet, sweet caress of a mattress and pillows. I feel sleepy.

What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?
I was a bit nervous since it’s been 2 semesters since I last took a math course.

How comfortable are you with math?
I used to be quite comfortable with HS Math. However, upon stepping in to UP, I found myself struggling my very first Math course as well as the next ones. I can follow along during lectures but I have a hard time solving the problems when I study by myself.

What’s your dominant feeling right now?

It’s about time I take this course. Why didn’t I take it last sem? Yup I was lazy (16 units lang last sem!). When I saw that the prof was TBA, I just hoped that I’ll get a ‘nice’ prof because this is a 13-something subject and I need all the help I can get. Voila! It’s Sir Paul! TYL.

How comfortable are you with math?
Not comfortable at all. Though I haven’t failed a Math subject before, my grades have not touched the line of 1. That’s sad because I really studied my ass off for exams.

What’s your dominant feeling right now?
sleepy and hungry and sleepy and needs motivation

    Hello world

    • What’s your name?

Hi I am Dana Kathleen Redeña. You can call me Dana. Dana is pronounced the same as the character Dana Scully from X-Files (my name was really based from her). Though I’m fine with people calling me with the usual ‘Dana’ pronunciation.

    • What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?

Honestly, I enrolled to this course with a “Bahala na si Batman”/”GG” feeling. Not because of CS 130 itself but the thought of juggling CS 153, CS 145, CS 130, and CS 194 (and others- a total of 19 units) all in one semester. I guess my load is a greater call for better study habits and just better life management in general.

    • How comfortable are you with math?

Math and I are in a love-hate relationship. I appreciate it and I want to actually go further in my learning, but (4 Math majors in) I feel like my brain is not as adept into learning/performing Math as I would other learnings like programming, science or design.

    • What’s your dominant feeling right now?

“How to adult?” (okay, not much of a feeling but a thought) I’m quite exhausted because of the new semester and also my org event commitment but I’m quite very fueled up for this semester (quite frankly even this year) as I want to do so many things (acads-wise, org-wise, personal-wise, adulting-wise, design-wise) like finally having proper CV and resume (Hi Sir Paul I remembered from CS 12 that you showed us your beautiful resume #goals). I just want to do so many things and I hope that I have the strength and great habits to do them.

What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?
As the description suggests, it’s all about math.. and I think I have to dedicated more time to it since medyo limot and bago pa sakin yung ibang topics.

Also, I was surprised when I learned the instructor is young because I thought that I’d have the classic math teacher but suprisingly not. This is my first time to have Sir Paul as my prof and I’m glad that he takes advantage of the available technologies such this blog which serves as an alternative gateway to give the student an avenue to express their thoughts and interests on the course.. tska plus points din ung mga interesting activities sa loob ng classroom. nakakaaliw. hehe! I just hope that I’ll enjoy throughout the sem because I am at the moment 🙂 …

How comfortable are you with math?
I’m ok with math. I find it challenging and exciting but I think I should take some readings, review and practice so that I’ll be able to pass the course.

What’s your dominant feeling right now?
excited and pressured because i need to read a lot and recall previous math topics because it’s been so long since i graduated.

How comfortable are you with math?

Sakto lang. I believe that it’s one of those subjects that you can be good at if you work really hard for it. There’s a pattern or a formula ganyan when you’re solving math problems so if you just keep on practicing + familiarize yourself with the topic and the steps in order to arrive to your solution, mas magiging madali ang pagintindi. Yata, huhu. I think key ang hard work so just practice, practice, practice.

How comfortable are you with math?
I understand the discussions most of the time but I need a lot of practice in order to answer exam questions and problem sets. What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?
“I need to review past math lessons; baka nakalimutan ko na.”
“Sana pumasa ako. Kailangan ko mag-aral nang mabuti. :))”
“Si Sir Paul yung prof. Yey! =)”

How comfortable are you with math?
I’m a bit comfortable with math (but I’m not that good with calculus). I find math REALLY interesting and useful. As long as the topics were explained well (and it makes sense to me), I’d probably be fine with it. :))

My full name is Jairus John Almazol Garcia. Most people call me Jairus, but you can also use Jay, Jay-Jay, Jai, Jai-Jai, or just any way you want, but please skip Rus-Rus ‘coz it kinda sounds like a genital disorder. (HAHAHA no, seriously)

    me while enlisting CS 130:
    “prereq Math55, check”
    “good timeslot, check”
    “G!”
    (and that’s all about it)

Long time ago, me and math lived together in harmony, but everything changed when UP happened. Only Sir Paul, master of Mathematical Methods in Computer Science, can help me, but when I needed him the most, ayun na-ospital. (hala joke lang sir. healthy ka sir this year. i can feel it)

    sorry sabaw 😀

    Hi Friend! (Week 1)

    What’s your name?
My name is Jan Carlo Gutierrez Albano, I go by JC.

What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?
I was filled with unrelenting fear as 130 has a “3” in it meaning it’s one of those subjects that you have to strategically avoid taking simultaneously with another “3” numbered course.

I enjoyed the first day though, never watched the Amazing World of Gumball cause #adventuretimemasterrace

How comfortable are you with math?
I think, having already lived for 19 years, it has come to my attention that, I’m not that good with Math, but hey I like the subject and there’s me having the amazing ability of knowing how to code.I have that going for me which is nice.

What’s your dominant feeling right now?
Chill~ reading a ten page article as homework, preparing for the heart attacks life may(will) bring, oh and trying to be successful in life by submitting to general capitalism.

    Hi!

I am Eunice Angel Dela Cruz Cruz 😀

When I enrolled for this course, I just thought, “hhmmm mahal na mahal yata ako ng math, ayaw akong pakawalan.” (and as if naman we’d part ways any sooner hehe)

I don’t remember myself hating math, in fact, I think I am very open and excited when it’s math time. I remember how the challenge of solving math problems (kind of) trigger the “competitive” me. Until the 1st half of my high school life, I think it was good. But it just became more and more challenging (and my math teacher/s were just way too intimidating for me that I can’t ask them for help #shytype hahaha jk) that even though my competitiveness is triggered, it was overpowered by anxiety and nervousness that sometimes, I just can’t get over with.

But truly, I do not hate math, I still find it interesting. I just need the right motivation and understanding as to where I’d be able to use all the things that math offers.

I am at ease, as of the moment. But… I think once this week ends, I’d be eaten by panic and I won’t be as happy as I am right now because I won’t be able to do things that are not related to academics (a.k.a. no time for my hobbies). #haggardsemforever :< #verypessimistic hahahaha

    What’s your name?

Hello, I’m Ma. Angelica Furo Furio, my friends call me Angel 🙂

What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?

“umaygad Math ulit” ,”hala, naalala ko pa ba 55 (Math) ko?” , “yey, Sir Paul!!”

Those were the thoughts running in my head when I enrolled in this course. Medyo nakaka-kaba ng slight since Math. Iniisip ko din kung gaano kaya kalalim na Math yung matututunan ko dito sa 130. And of course, ‘di mawawala yung tanong na “Paano ko kaya ‘to magagamit in the future”.

How comfortable are you with math?

I’m not that comfortable with Math, but I want to be a responsible student kaya gagawin ko best ko na ma-gets ang mga lesson 🙂

What’s your dominant feeling right now?

Hey everyone, my name is John Theodore Yap, but you can call me Theo or JT.

I finally finished Math 55 after 3 takes, so I’m a bit ecstatic and relieved to finally be taking CS 130, but I’m also a bit scared because as far as I know, CS 130 series is a killer. However, my resolve is refreshed and hopefully a lot stronger, so I’m ready for the challenge.

I wasn’t that confident in math until I hardcore drilled myself over Math 55, so I’d like to think I’m prepared, but I’ll keep an open mind and an open heart.

Right now, I’m feeling hopeful, but I don’t want to get my hopes too high or get too cocky.

    HOI World!

    [Week 1: Introductions]

Hey guys! I’m Aliya Ahlanna Miranda. You can just call me Aliya (nope! not Aliyah nor Aaliyah :P). This is my second time taking CS130 since I’m kinda bad with math (creii). I honestly like solving problems but when the questions get tougher, I tend to become reaaalllyy confused and start panicking (;w;) Math does not reciprocate my feelings <///3 I also took Math 55 twice. I realized though, that I found my second take of Math 55 easier- maybe because it IS my second take or I was able to focus on it because I took it during a midsem. I wanna prove that by taking this major again, I CAN PASS.

I enrolled this semester feeling like entering a war zone, but with extra bullets and experience and ready to start the battle. I just got out of probation. All the majors I’m taking this sem are all the majors I failed last year. Taking them all again is triggering my bad memories but I feel more confident now because I was able to get out of my probationary status.

I’m really happy though that Sir Paul is teaching the course ‘cos I really like his teaching style (OwO) Starting the semester with one of my favorite profs has filled me with ♦ D E T E R M I N A T I O N ♦

PS Sorry Sir Paul! Sabi nyo po babaan namin expectations namin sa inyo pero ramdam na po na magiging masaya ang klase 😀 No pressure po hihi ❤

    Week 1: Introduce yourself

    What’s your name?
Hi! I’m Alezon Maxine Valerio, Alezon for short.

What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?
“Sana naman mapasa ko na ‘to this sem.”

How comfortable are you with math?
I feel pretty indifferent with regards to Math. Back in grade school, I was thankful for it being the subject with the least amount of things to memorize but I never particularly liked it. I did well to the point of joining inter school math contests, but it was pretty far from being my favorite subject. When high school came and there were more letters than numbers in equations, my usual ease in solving problems ceased to exist and I was faced with probably the most frustrating subject of all time. I admit it is pretty satisfying when you complete a solution though, so despite the fact that now I find it so difficult, Math still gives me the most fulfilling feeling among any other subjects. I’m truthfully shit at it now what with my Math and Math-related CS grades never going higher than 2.50, but hey, nothing beats the feeling of overcoming something so frustratingly difficult.

And as a BS CS student, I have to deal with Math all the time like it’s a bratty sibling that annoys and frustrates me constantly, but I have no other choice but to love it and deal with it every single day because it’s sometimes nice and is family. So yeah, I just try not to care so much and ended up feeling indifferent towards Math/Math-related subjects.

What’s your dominant feeling right now?

Just like the usual: there is the lingering self-loathing brought upon by the unfortunate events of reality and the anxiety of what tomorrow might bring.

Sup! I’m AF. Short for Adrian Formaran. But you can call me whatever you like, as long as it’s nothing cringy or disgusting.

    • What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?

I’m quite the stereotype Asian nigga everyone knows – Math and Science lover. I say I enjoy the math side of Computer Science cause they pose some nice problems. I prefer it to the programming courses, so I’m quite hyped to be enrolled in this course , especially having sir Paul as my prof for the first time.

    • How comfortable are you with math?

Math’s been my whole childhood. I grew up eating math for brunch and dinner. Our school heavily focused on math. As much as I am not that good at it, people yearn for the things they don’t have so I really like this subject.

    • What’s your dominant feeling right now?

My feelings are hard to describe. Sometimes, I am not even sure of what I’m feeling. More so the fact in telling you what it is; since how could you fathom what other people feel through an explanation? So my final answer is… I’m not too sure.

This is what I look like both online and irl.

    15319242_333520503700492_6091328632144042957_n

    • What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?

I heard that CS 130 was gonna be a difficult course, but now I guess it’s all okay since Sir Paul will be the one teaching. I think that this will be an exciting course and I hope I will be able to appreciate and apply the concepts even after I pass this course (Yes let’s be positive 🙂 #ClaimingIt).

    • How comfortable are you with math?

Much more comfortable than blogging in wordpress, seriously I’ve never done this before or anything similar so I’m still figuring out the functionalities. :)))

Anyway back to the topic, outside of classroom settings I actually like math. I hate having to solve problems and solving them really fast during an exam, but when I apply it in other things irl I find it fun to do.

One of my favorite games is Fire Emblem. It’s a turn based strategy game where you control your units (people), fight enemy units, and do certain objectives like killing the boss of that chapter or seizing a castle or throne room. It has an RNG, but a lot of things can be calculated using math. For example: damage is UNIT_TOTAL_ATTACK – ENEMY_TOTAL_DEFENCE, hit rate is UNIT_HIT – ENEMY_AVOID, etc.

In this game you can predict the future (outcomes of battles, enemy movement, etc.) by calculating A LOT. Sometimes I even have to use a calculator when I’m planning my strategy for the current map. I find it fun calculating a lot of little things just to make sure that my unit can kill all enemies within range while at the same time remaining alive. Since this game has an RNG I also have to calculate probabilities, for example what is the probability that my player will miss an attack. Even “good” strategies can be turned around if you’re unlucky to have your opponent land a 1% crit on one of your low hp units. I think that these probability calculations in Fire Emblem somewhat helped me develop the idea for IskoDuler.

So yeah, I’d say I’m comfortable with math, but only outside the classroom.

    • What’s your dominant feeling right now?

Cold. Anlamig dito sa TLC. So sad na tapos na yung pasko pero SMP parin ako :((( hahaha jk :)))

Most of the time when I’m alone, I feel okay, but I’m really not so yeah. It’s something to work on. But with other people, I’m energized enough to interact with them.

    Week 1: Introduce yourself

Hi! I’m Rafael Miguel Veneracion Cantero. Most people just call me Rafa.

CS 130… I’ve heard a lot about it from upperclassmen and I honestly wasn’t very excited to take it this sem. I know it’s quite math heavy and if it’s anything like 135, it would be pretty difficult.

I think my math skills are average at best. I did well with math 17 but struggled with the 50 series. I prefer coding and logical problem solving more than having to memorize equations. I also feel less motivation to study hard for subjects that don’t feel practical to me. And I never really felt  the more advanced calculus topics to be very practical.

Right now my dominant feeling would be laziness(?). The Christmas break felt short and I’m still not ready to get back into the college life hahahuhu. All I want to do right now is just sleep/eat/play and having Monday to Saturday classes doesn’t help. x-x

    Hi!Fa

Hallo hallo! I am Haifa Gaza, a 3rd year BS Computer Science student!

I am currently taking up the course Mathematical Methods in Computer Science… (Do you see that course title? It gives me shivers). Honestly, I didn’t have any thoughts regarding this course. I took it because I had to take it after finishing my Math series. I didn’t even know what it was seriously about before. Good thing our Professor showed us an interesting TEDxStandford video to motivate us. *poof inspiration* That should keep me going for the rest of the semester. (or not … this is Math we are talking about…)

The title itself screams MATHEMATICS… I thought that if my grades in Math were a graph, it would probably be something like an ugly parabola with a vertex at (5,0). I know that to pass a Math course, I need extra EFFORT for practice, practice, and exercisessssssss. And I know that not all efforts are paid off that is why Math and I are in a love-hate relationship.

It’s just that I really am hoping for a good semester. Somehow I shifted back to feeling that I need to get higher grades to prove myself to myself. Others can do it, why can’t I?

How comfortable are you with math?
I like math but I find it difficult. I enjoyed it when I was in high school but Math 50 series gave me a hard time finding it enjoyable. Browsing through modules and samplexes felt like I was reading some kind of alien language. It’s not easy solving math problems but it’s rewarding when I finally understand and solve them.

What’s your dominant feeling right now?
I’m excited to learn more about the applications of this course in CS especially after watching the TEDx video.

    Week 1: Introduce yourself

My name is Jerico Lim Silapan. You can call me Jeco, Echo, Jecong, Kulot, but you can just call me Jerico.

With the rumors spreading around about how 13x subjects are hard, my initial reaction as I saw my appeal contract, I was afraid and petrified for some seconds. Seeing not just one, but two (2) 13x subjects was like a scene from horror movie and gave me a chill in the spine. Even though it’s hard, I will do my best and pray.

Honestly, during my grade school years, I’m a MTAP student and I was sent by our school to compete. I was confident at my Mathematics skills before, but after I stepped in the High School zone, it was all flushed in the sewers. I don’t know why but during my high school, I’m like a child learning math again. I don’t really know what happened therefore my grades are dropping harder than a lit bass, but I never stopped trying to learn. I never hated math, and I can say that I’m a little bit comfortable with it, but I’m a slow learner. I need to put effort to understand it and overcome the walls build by the legendary Mathematics. So I will never stop trying and will do my best for this course.

I currently feeling scared but with enthusiasm. It’s like the feeling when you are entering a new school, where you see new teachers and classmates, you are scared and alone but there is something inside you that wants to meet all of the new people and experience the new adventure coming.

    P.S.
K U L O T cause I have a curly hair, but at some time last year, I did an experiment and relaxed my hair on a salon. Well, just look at my hair during class to see the results.

    I'm Levi.

    Week 1: Introduce Yourself

Hi there. My name is Levi Joshua De Guia.

I didn’t really think much about the course and what to expect from it when I enlisted it during the first batch run. One thing’s for sure in my mind that time. It’s 13x, therefore it’s hard.

I was pretty comfortable with Mathematics during my high school days, permitting me to study the night just by browsing notes before the examination and still get a decent grade. Then, college happened. Institute of Mathematics’ exam difficulty happened. I absolutely hate solving sample problems as a way to review (except when there is an answer key) so when professors and instructors kept reminding us to practice to do well, I knew I’m done for. It also began in college where I “legit” didn’t understand what was happening on some lessons even though I was paying attention. So reflecting on the question now, I’m slightly not comfortable with Math anymore. But maybe I haven’t found my inspiration yet to truly appreciate and devote a part of myself to Mathematics.

I’m stressed already just by hearing the requirements I have to do this semester and it’s not even a week yet.

I agree, college math is way different to high school math. But I hope you’ll find inspiration in math in our course, Levi. If not through the lessons, maybe through your seat mate. Jk

    What’s your name?
My name’s Mikayla Lopez. You can call me Mikay. c:

What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?
Nervous, since it has kinda stuck with me that “CS math == difficult math”. But now I’m excited to go through with it, since there’ll be some mandatory outside-of-class review/discussion in a blogging sort of fashion, plus I’d really like to know more about matrices and do some maths again, so, yeah, that’s pretty cool. :))

How comfortable are you with math?
I honestly like and/or appreciate Math; solving problems and equations can get me pretty hyped. I’m not too confident with my skills though (especially with the theoretical stuff), mainly because I haven’t really done any practice since I finished the Math 50 series, so there’s that.

What’s your dominant feeling right now?
I’m feeling motivated to be productive tonight. This blogging thing is making me all excited. :)) (Writing is nice hehe)

    Hi!

    Week 1: Introduce Yourself

    What’s your name?

Hi! I’m Aimee Nicole Gonzales. Aimee, for short 🙂

What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?
This is my second 13x subject. I thought that I am finished with math, but 130 is another math subject (disguised as a CS subject). I wonder if I still remember what I’ve learned in the 50 series.

How comfortable are you with math?
Ever since my elementary days, my parents really made sure that I appreciate the value of math. They enrolled me in various math programs. I even attended MTAP since Grade 1 until 4th year high school. My journey with math is quite happy, I guess. I do appreciate it a lot when the theories are applied and not just stated for lesson’s sake.

What’s your dominant feeling right now?
Honestly, I’m trying to be optimistic about this semester. I feel that I need to put in an extra effort to pass my subjects (which means I need to sacrifice a lot).

I applaud your parents, Aimee, for supporting you at a very young age. CS is full of math, so appreciating the importance of math can take you a long way.

    Start of an Epic Journey

    Week 1: Introduce yourself

    What’s your name?

    Arlan Vincent D. Uy

What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?

    My thoughts are the following:

    • This class might be the most fun class in Math that I will ever take
    • How come Math 55 became a prerequisite for this class? What particular topics in Math 55 are needed for this course.
    • I just want to graduate on time as much as possible (This is why I’m taking this subject as early as possible)

How comfortable are you with math?

Oftentimes, I enjoy math and all its little eccentricities and because of this I learn Math not just for purpose of being a required subject but also for fun. In other times, however, I just make comments about it using an angery emoticon. This is because sometimes it fools me that I know in depth one of its certain topic even though I really am just on the tip of the iceberg. Nevertheless, both enjoying studying Math and making angery comments towards Math made me know this subject more and I am just really thankful for this kind of relationship I have with Math

What’s your dominant feeling right now?

Happy because Sir Paul is my professor and thankful that I have one more opportunity to strengthen my relationship with Math

Hi Arlan! I can’t remember all the topics in Math 55, but I think later on in the course, we’ll be dealing with series.

    • John Ramonel M. Roque

What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?

    • My understanding in Mathematics will be deeper and at long last I will be able to see some action between real life and algebra (LE, DE, etc.). I am also hoping that I will be able to apply it in my field of work soon.

How comfortable are you with math?

    • Hmm, kinda rusty since I am just playing with the basics due to work but fairly comfortable I should say. 🙂

What’s your dominant feeling right now?

    • Curiosity.

    Intro to Me

    Week 1: Introduce yourself

    What’s your name?
Hi, my name is Paulo Gabriel A. Santiago. You can call me Paulo.

What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?
My first choice to enroll this semester was actually CS 133 but then I was advised to take up CS 130 instead since it’s a prerequisite of CS 131. When I think about CS 130, I think about deeper math, CS subject BUT more Math. I’m interested/scared about how this subject goes.

How comfortable are you with math?
I’ve always had a good understanding of Math. I enjoyed algebra in elementary and high school and thankfully, I attained good grades. In college, I studied with the same pacing as when I was in high school and it wasn’t really a good pace. I only study whenever needed or when an exam is coming so I didn’t have good grades. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed it.
My study habits were too lazy that I failed my first Math 55 take. Maybe it was partly because my professor wasn’t as good as I wanted her to be but it’s mostly because I was REALLY lazy. So I took Math 55 the next midyear and I really tried to focus and study well because I wanted to prove to myself that I can excel with enough effort. Thankfully, I got an uno :)))) and I really understood the topics and enjoyed the subject as well. I did well with Math 55 then but I’m a forgetful person so I may need to brush up on my calculus and other mathematical stuff.

What’s your dominant feeling right now?
I’m feeling positive. It’s the start of a new semester. I never really did well last semester, at least to my standards, so I’m hoping to be better and more focused now that I have more major subjects than the previous semesters.

    It me

    Week 1: Introduce yourself

    What’s your name?
Wassup, I’m Christine Felizardo, but you can call me Christine.

What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?
Honestly, I was in a very “WOO YES PUMASA NA AKO NG 55 PWEDE NA AKO MAG-130” mood. Although, I didn’t think too much about what I’ll expect from this subject. I do know there’s a lot of math yet again, but that’s pretty much it.

How comfortable are you with math?
Story time! I loved my Math 5x series. I never got a grade above 2.25 and below 2.5, but that doesn’t match up the fun I’ve had reviewing for exams (YES, I really did enjoy my studying for each LE). My most favourite of all is 55, which I actually took twice; I dropped it the first time, because I disliked my prof (a combo-breaker for my series of wonderful, kind Math profs) and I didn’t feel like I was appreciating what I was learning. Was 55 supposed to be that tedious? Why am I upset? (The real reason, however, is that I was anticipating removals and we were going abroad the week after the semester ended. I didn’t want to miss that so I just nipped it in the bud.)
The second time was the real game-changer. I didn’t think too much about what I felt about math when I took 53 and 54, but by the time I was taking 55 I was like wow, I actually love math. I feel like it was largely because my prof now was once again part of the wonderful & kind ones I mentioned earlier, which I am super grateful for since it changed my attitude on 55. There’s just something fun about double/triple integrals, or drawing an elliptic paraboloid, or even solving for whether this equation was convergent or divergent. Sure it would frustrate me to an extent when something wasn’t right, but I mostly channel that frustration to checking what I’m missing, then trying again. Math was a constant cycle of learning. I eventually got to appreciate the complexity of it all.
To sum it up, I’m comfortable with Math.

What’s your dominant feeling right now?
I’m hopeful about the coming semester, and even the coming months of 2017. I’m expecting a lot of crying occurring in the near future, but that’s what adds spice to life, honestly.

That’s a great attitude Christine! I hope this course will add another cycle to your learning. 🙂

    Week 1: Introduce yourself

    What’s your name?
Hi! I’m Roben Delos Reyes. You can call me Roben /row-ben/.

What were your thoughts when you enrolled in this course?
It is going to be full of math.

How comfortable are you with math?
Math used to be one of my favorite subjects when I was younger. I like it and I’m good at it, but when I was in high school, I got tired of it. I don’t want to study it more on a higher level because I’m too lazy to analyze and solve math problems. Unfortunately, Computer Science is full of math so I’m stuck with it. I still enjoy it though. I enjoyed the 50 series, but I’m just too too lazy.

What’s your dominant feeling right now?
    Right now, I’m feeling happy.

    Hi, I’m Paul!

Hi I’m Paul Rossener Regonia, the instructor for this course.

When I picked this course as my only course to teach this sem, I thought that this will be challenging. It’s my first time to teach 130, and I have little time to prepare for it (partly my fault).

I love math. I was part of the math club in our high school. My favorite subject back then was analytic geometry. I like shapes and graphs. And that’s why whenever I’m working on a data science project, I almost always start with visualizing the data and processes.

I only had four hours of sleep today because I stayed up all night preparing for class. So I’m a bit lightheaded. Yet excited for class!
